Barker offers a wide choice of elective subjects for its students.

Year 9 Electives

In Year 9 at Barker, all students are required to study certain disciplines considered to be essential for effective living in a modern society. The core subjects for Year 9 are English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE, Christian Studies and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). In addition, students choose three elective subjects in Year 9.

Year 10 Electives

The Barker College Curriculum in Year 10 is designed to provide foundational experience in courses of study that develop a systematic and self-directed approach essential for academic success in Years 11 and 12, as well as establishing secure foundations in the knowledge, skills and understanding expected in the major subject areas offered in the Preliminary (Year 11) and HSC (Year 12) courses. Students cannot proceed to Preliminary Courses without having completed Stage 5 (Year 10) satisfactorily.

All Year 10 students at Barker are required to study English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE, Christian Studies and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. For Christian Studies, students can choose between the regular Christian Studies course or the Extension Christian Studies course - READ MORE. Accelerated HSC Business Studies

In 2026 there is an opportunity for Year 10 students to apply to undertake an Accelerated Business Studies course. This course is available as one of the three Year 10 electives. READ MORE

Year 11 and 12 Electives

At Barker, the Preliminary courses in all subjects will have typically been completed in the first three terms of Year 11. The Higher School Certificate courses will commence in Term 4 of Year 11 and be completed by the end of Term 3 of Year 12.

Important Notes

In order to form an elective class, a minimum class size must be reached. Classes may not be formed if this number is not achieved and students will be contacted for a reserve choice.
