Parent and child and Preschool classes (6 months +)

Our infant programs are divided into four key stages that reflect the development characteristics of infant children such as motor, cognitive and personal skills. Each key stage provides a guide to appropriate teaching methods and their ability to engage in aquatic programs and to learn from them. The age categories form a useful basis for planning, grouping practices.

Parent and child age appropriate classes

Parent & child Level 1 (6-12 months) – offers a fun introduction to water with songs and water games, to feel comfortable in the water and to teach breath control in readiness for submersion.

Parent & child Level 2 (12-18 months) – gain the fundamentals of breath control, submersion, entries and exits.
Kicking, paddling and floating are introduced in a fun way.

Parent & child Level 3 (18-24 months) – increase mobility, floatation, entries, exits and submersion independently.

Parent & child Level 4 (24-30 months) - preparing your child to advance to a mainstream class without their parents in the water.

Learn To Swim Program:

The swimming and water safety program aims to:

  • Encourage the development of a child’s confidence in the water by providing a wide variety of activities in a safe environment.
  • Increase your child’s awareness and understanding of the need for water safety by teaching appropriate skills and activities.
  • Encourage and develop survival skills.
  • Encourage and develop swimming strokes and water skills which form the basis of recreational and competitive swimming, as well as other aquatic sports & activities.
  • Focus on correct stroke technique in all four disciplines, incorporating distance and endrance.
  • Build social skills and coordination in a safe learning environment.
Preschool Classes (30 months to 5 years)

Barker College Aquatic Centre caters for preschool children from 2 1/2 to 5 years - ideal if they have attended a series of Barker College parent and child classes and, are familiar with the Centre and are willing to separate from their parents for the period of the lesson.  These classes are predominantly held Monday to Friday, from 9.00am to 11.30pm.


Duration: 30 minute classes

School-aged Classes (5 years +)

Our school aged classes cater for all ability levels, from new swimmers to more advanced students, seeking to develop stroke technique, increase distances and improve competitive skills.  These classes are usually held from 7.30am to 8.30am and 3.00pm to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, or from 7.30am to 12.00pm on weekends. 

Duration: 30, 45 and 60 minute classes

Private Lessons:
  • 2 ½ - 5 years

If your 2 ½ - 5 year old child is not familiar with the water, private lessons would be your first step. Toddlers who are being introduced to an aquatic program for the first time will not have the same knowledge of the aquatic environment as their peers with more experience. Children who have not experienced water familiarisation, if placed in a mainstream beginner class, will slow the class progression down in order for the instructor to cater for the needs of an absolute beginner. Private lessons help to build confidence, trust and water familiarisation.

Duration: 15, 30 or 60 minute classes

  • 5 years – Adults

Private swim lessons are offered to anyone who will benefit from one-on-one instruction, tailored to an individual's specific needs. These lessons will be available at the discretion of the Program Coordinator.

Adult Learn to Swim

The Swim School conducts friendly and relaxed classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Learn to swim classes feature the development of water confidence, safety skills and basic strokes. Intermediate and advanced classes include stroke correction, breathing techniques and improved fitness.

Beginner: This class is designed for swimmers who may have a fear of the water and are not confident to submerge.
The aim is to develop water confidence and teach basic swimming skills.

Intermediate: The aim of the class is for students to further develop their swimming strokes and start to establish knowledge on breathing techniques and arm strokes.

Advanced: The aim of the class is for swimmers to develop stroke technique and distance with all swimming strokes.

Duration: 30 minute classes

 

Please Note:  From February 1st 2018, LTS classes will run on a perpetual basis - i.e. classes will be run every week (including holiday periods) until the centre closes for Christmas break in mid-December each year.  

The Centre is closed on Public Holidays and for approximately two (2) weeks over the Christmas / New Year period each year.  No fees will be charged during these days.
