At Barker we combine outstanding facilities and people with high quality contemporary sporting programs to inspire all students, every day. Furthermore, we empower staff to deliver the best possible experience to students while supporting a culture that fosters a sense of belonging.
Sport is an integral part of life at Barker. Selection in a School team is a matter of pride. Participation in team sports, healthy competition and skills development are essential elements in the development of well-balanced young people. A strong sense of sportsmanship and fair play is fostered among the whole School community. Participation in sports is compulsory at Barker from Years 3 - 12 inclusive.
We aim to create an environment in which students can challenge themselves without the fear of failure, where they can achieve personal goals and where they can feel comfortable trying a new skill or sport for the first time.
We believe the sports program gives students the opportunity to:
- increase their physical fitness, their social and emotional wellbeing and their ability to learn in the classroom
- connect with peers and the wider School community through engaging in a variety of sports
- learn lifelong skills such as collaboration, time management, teamwork and dedication
- develop and enhance values such as courage, respect, commitment and integrity, and
- develop a lifelong love of physical activity in one form or another
Most sports offer several levels of interschool competition and students are carefully graded to a team that matches their individual level of skill. In addition students compete in House Competitions including Athletics, Swimming and Cross-Country.
Barker invests heavily in its coaching program with a strong blend of highly experienced and professional coaches, young emerging coaches, past students and of course our teaching staff. Our primary aim is to provide all students with an enjoyable sporting experience, where excellence is pursued and individual potential is realised.
For our athletes in all sports, who are performing and training at the highest level, Barker's BASE program prioritises the health and well-being of our student athletes, and our staff work closely with them to ensure that they are supported in all aspects of their lives.
We also have an experienced, passionate, and dedicated Strength and Conditioning team. Working with teams, and one-on-one with students, the Strength and Conditioning team ensures the students are developing not only stronger bodies, but also stronger minds.
Junior School Sport
Barker is part of the Independent Primary School's Heads' Association (IPSHA), which organises Saturday competitions, carnivals and major sports for students in Years 3 - 6. This inclusive program is designed to promote skill development, team spirit and engagement. IPSHA carnivals are held throughout the year for Athletics, Swimming and Diving and Cross Country. Students may be selected from these carnivals to compete at NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS), state competitions (NSWPSSA) and School Sport Australia national (SSA) levels.

Secondary School Sport
Students in Years 7 - 12 are offered a wide choice of sports, with many of the fixtures played either during the School week or on a Saturday. Students commit to a Summer (Terms 1 and 4) and a Winter (Terms 2 and 3) sport.
Barker students compete in the Independent Sporting Association (ISA), Committee of Associated Schools (CAS) and local competitions. These provide students with the representative pathway to CIS (Combined Independent Schools), NSW All Schools and eventually Australian All Schools.

In the event that a sport fixture is cancelled please check the student’s timetable in MyBarker. If the sport fixture is cancelled it will be crossed out with the word ‘CANCELLED’ alongside.
