Year 9

Photographic and Digital Media

The Photographic and Digital Media course has been designed for students who engage in project based learning, are creative thinkers, problem solvers and have an interest in new technologies. This course runs alongside of the Visual Arts course and is structured similarly. Elective students would be able to carry their specialised skill set into the Stage 6 Visual Arts course and work in Photography or a digital medium for their Body of Work.

This course has been designed to be fun, exciting, engaging and will equip students with skills and techniques desired in creative fields. It enables students to represent their ideas and interests about the world, to engage in contemporary forms of communication and to understand and write about their world. They will study photography and filmmakers while developing their critical and creative thinking.

The Year 9 course focuses on still image making and covers units such as:

Wet media photography - students learn how to use a manual SLR camera, film development and enlarging in the darkroom.

Studio photography - students learn how to use studio lighting, painting with light and camera lens.

Digital photography - students learn programs such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Students create a mini magazine, a zine, with their edited photographs.

Assessment Structure

The practical component of the course is 60% and the theoretical component (critical and historical studies) is worth 40%. Photographic and Digital Media provides an excellent foundation for the study of Visual Arts at HSC level. It is not, however, a prerequisite for these courses.
