Year 12

HSC English Extension
Course Description

In HSC English Extension 1, students explore ideas about literary texts and the worlds created by them, including their value and how cultural values and systems of valuation arise and operate. English Extension 1 is designed for students undertaking English Advanced who choose to study at a more intensive level in diverse, but specific areas. They enjoy engaging with complex levels of conceptualisation and seek the opportunity to work in increasingly independent ways.

In HSC English Extension 2, students develop a sustained composition and document their reflection on this process.

Main Topics Covered

HSC English Extension 1 has two modules. In Year 12 2020 students will be studying the common module, ‘Literary Worlds’ and the elective, ‘Reimagined Worlds’. HSC English Extension 2 requires students to complete a Major Work, compile a detailed Journal and compose a Reflection Statement.

Particular Course Requirements

HSC English Extension 1 requires the study of 3 prescribed texts (including two print texts) and related texts of students’ own choosing. HSC English Extension 2 requires completion (for internal assessment purposes) of a Viva Voce addressing the proposal for the Major Work, a Literature Review reflecting on the impact of independent investigation on the development of the Major Work and a Critique of the Creative Process evaluating the revising and editing process.

For external assessment, students submit a Major Work, Reflection Statement and Reflective Journal for authentication of the Major Work.

Assessment Structure

HSC English Extension 1 requires the completion of in-class responses to unseen texts, a portfolio of writing and the Trial exam. The HSC exam requires 2 one hour responses, where one is generally imaginative and reflective, and the other one is an extended analytical essay.
