STEAM @ Barker
What is STEAM? Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.
At Barker we provide a multi-disciplinary student engagement approach to learning that nurtures curiosity and develops creativity. Our aim is to help students from Pre-K to Year 12, relate technical concepts to real world situations and applications. Enrolments in the elective courses for Maths, Sciences, IT, Design and Art are very strong at Barker and our aim is to continue to promote, inspire and encourage student engagement with the STEAM related subjects, into their post-school studies.
In 2018, a new iSTEAM elective was introduced for students in Years 9 and 10. This is a pure elective allowing students to work in new and creative ways, whilst developing their interest and skills.
In 2016, Barker was recognised as a STEM Academy Partner School with the University of Sydney. Through this partnership Barker College benefits from the training courses provided, networking and mentoring opportunities for our staff in conjunction with the University of Sydney.
Imagine an immersive learning environment using three-dimensional (3D) models and virtual reality? Students at Barker were the first to have a functional, networked zSpace lab introduced in 2016. The virtual reality setting and interactive 3D models in zSpace, provides an immersive and enriching educational technology that supports STEAM subjects throughout the School.
The Barker Robotics program continues to go from strength to strength, with the team now recognised internationally, following their success in competitions in China, Canada and the USA. However, it is not just about building robots or about winning - it is about students learning they can achieve great things if they convert their dreams into planned, deliberate action. Along the way, they learn and apply science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.
Barker has adopted a whole-school approach to its Robotics program with students able to participate in Robotics from Year 5. Junior School students are also able to develop their Coding skills, through an after school program available to them. Coding helps build logic and problem solving skills, as well as enabling new avenues for creativity and creative expression.
