Barker students are very lucky to have access to the industry standard Geographic Information System (GIS) ArcMap. Our students use the program to explore the countries of the world (Year 8), recent volcanic eruptions (Year 9), spatial inequality (Year 10), population density (Year 11), world cities and divided Sydney (Year 12).
The students’ use of the program increases in its complexity in the higher years. By Year 12 they are able to produce informative presentations that analyse a range of characteristics of our world.
Our students are privileged to use this program given that there is a shortage of GIS-capable employees in the workforce. Recent statistics suggested that there were 6 jobs advertised for each GIS graduate leaving university or college. Barker has developed a series of activities called “The Barker Project” which gives our students a great edge.
