Black Summer

Painting

Lucy McBarron

My piece Black Summer aims to capture the unpredictable and detrimental impact of bushfires, inspired by the 2019-2020 Australian bushfire season.

My body of work includes four landscape paintings of a friend’s property affected by the fires, from which our horses had to be evacuated. Two of the paintings depict the heat and unstoppable nature of the fires and the other two depict the aftermath, one painted in muted tones portraying a burnt landscape and the other encapsulating the rejuvenation period post-bushfire. I was inspired by English Romantic painter JMW Turner and Joseph Wright.
