My Trusted Friends

Textile & Fibre

Jacqueline Hamilton

My body of work consists of two soft sculptures and addresses the issue of domestic violence, specifically how it affects children.

I have chosen to convey this dark concept of family conflict and trauma, by creating two playful soft sculptures. This intentional juxtaposition draws the viewer in, to engage with this confronting concept. The bunny is a symbol of self-soothing, a “trusted friend” to the afflicted child. Illustrations of objects of abuse have been drawn and sublimated onto the fabric within the ears and on the feet of both the bunnies, initially appearing to the viewer as an appealing floral pattern. Influential artists include Grayson Perry and Claes Oldenburg.
