Isabel James

Childhood memories are fleeting, and often paradoxical. My body of work deconstructs the thought process of reflection.

It navigates an upbringing and younger self that should be remembered as joyful and innocent but has been tainted by the perspective of time, appearing in the mind as disjointed images and objects with contrasting light and dark tonality. Like memories from the past, my drawings yield complex layers of emotion. When these snapshots are assembled, they present a mental diary of a childhood altered by the ominous lens of more adult realities. Influential artists include Renato Orara, Andy Quilty, and Margaret Keane.
