The final round of the CAS Winter sport season on Saturday 11 August, ended with Barker College securing the CAS Championship titles for both Football and Rugby.
On Saturday the 1st XV team scored a resounding victory over Knox Grammar – 69 -19. The game featured the powerful running and deft passing skills which have punctuated the team’s performances all year. It was a fitting way to complete the season with 15 victories, a massive 748 points and finishing undefeated CAS Champions for 2018.
“The Year 12 players were very conscious of finishing their Barker rugby journey with a strong performance,” Head Coach Mr Dean Hargreaves said. “All season they have striven to provide an inspiration for the younger players and to leave a legacy that will be remembered. They have achieved both these goals admirably.”
“The School is incredibly proud of these young men not only for the fine performances they have demonstrated, but more importantly for the wonderful example of humility, determination and sportsmanship they have provided to all Barker students.”
The Barker 2018 Football season had also shaped up to be a positive one. The team comprised of a number of students from Year 11 and Year 12, many playing in the NPL outside of school as well, and were supported by newly appointed Head Coach, Mr John Carnevale and Barker staff member, Mr Lachlan Macintyre. Captain Lachlan Lloyd (12) was returning to the 1st XI for his third year and did an outstanding job of leading his fellow peers on and off the field. Barker’s 1st XI squad comprised of not just 11 players, but around 18 players who contributed to the success of the squad over the season.
Placing 3rd in the St Andrews Cup and NSWCIS Cup were both pleasing efforts, but only made the team more hungry to win the CAS season. In spectacular fashion the Premiership came down to the tenth and final game of the CAS season at Barker’s home ground against Knox.
Lloyd and his team managed to come back from one nil down to draw the game, enough to seal the Premiership and bring the much coveted Thomas Grimson Cup back to Barker College (last won by Barker in 2013).
Mr Jonathan Sparks, Coordinator of the Boys’ Football program, said “I couldn’t be more happy for the boys! After six years in the role, it was wonderful to see the culmination of all the hard work that has gone on in the years leading up to this one, as well as the hard work and dedication by Head Coach, John Carnevale and assistant, Mr Macintyre. The boys thoroughly deserved the reward for their hard work on the field, their never give up attitude and their ability to work as a team.”
