I hope you are enjoying a restful break and I apologise for this interruption. However, given the border closure at midnight last night between NSW and Victoria it is important that I reiterate the advice provided by the NSW Government on Tuesday 7 July, that any returning NSW resident who has visited Victoria during this mid-term break, will be required to go into self-isolation for a period of 14 days. 

Therefore we respectfully ask that if this situation applies to you, that you refrain from sending your child to school for the start of Term 2b for a period of 14 days since they returned to NSW and monitor carefully for symptoms. Please notify our School Reception (reception@barker.nsw.edu.au) to advise of your child’s absence for this reason. 

If symptoms develop, please seek COVID-19 testing and self-isolate until the test result is available and the 14 days isolation period has lapsed.

You may have read the statement today by the NSW Premier regarding the progressive shutdown of non-essential services in NSW. In the light of this, the School will now transition to fully online learning from Tuesday 24 March.

This decision recognises the escalating concerns about the COVID-19 situation. It also honours the advice of numerous parents who are members of the medical community, who have expressed their concerns to me about the depth of this crisis.

On Monday 23 March, the School will be open for Year 12 students so that they can prepare for the weeks ahead. Year 12 students should proceed to their first timetabled class of the day. The School will also provide a modified academic program for students in all other years (Pre-K - 11) for families who are unable to make arrangements at such short notice.

Students in Years 7 - 11 who need to attend School tomorrow should meet outside on the OBA Soundstage at 8.30am for allocation to supervised areas.There will be no co-curricular activities before or after school on Monday 23 March, but the Barker buses will continue to run their normal schedule for students who need to attend tomorrow. 

Subject to the clarification of Government tomorrow morning, from Tuesday 24 March, Barker will move to fully online provisions. The School will keep the community informed.

COVID-19 Community Update in the Event of a School Closure

Dear Parents and Guardians

Further to my update on 5 March 2020, I wish to provide additional advice for families and students in the event that the School is required to close due to a member of the Barker community being diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus.

We have seen in recent days how quickly several Sydney schools have been required to close due to the confirmation of COVID-19 virus within their community.

We understand that this is a worrying time for many in our School community. Please be assured that the Senior Executive team and School Council are responding to the situation as it evolves. The School’s Critical Incident Response Team have a detailed plan in place in the event of a diagnosed case.

At the time of writing, there are currently no diagnosed cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) at the School and no need for concern. However, in the event of a School closure, the following steps will be put in place immediately:

Student Learning – Secondary School

Course content for students in Years 7 – 12 will be delivered on a cohort wide basis through Canvas. Feedback will be provided by class teachers to their class through Canvas, OneNote, or email. Teaching staff will continue to mark work submitted by students.

Should the School be required to close during the Year 12 HSC Assessment block later this term, the assessments will be moved to the start of Term 2 and lesson material that would normally have been taught at that time, will be covered remotely. Amended assessment schedules will be published when details around any shutdown are confirmed.

All Secondary students are asked to take their device and charger home each night.

Student Learning – Junior School

Students will have work provided via OneNote classroom notebooks as well as Seesaw (Pre-K to Year 2) and Canvas (Years 3 – 6). Teachers will provide Mathematics, English and Inquiry work for the children to continue with. There may also be work provided by specialist teachers. Teaching staff will be able to provide students with feedback on work completed through the student learning platforms.

We ask that all students in Years 5 – 12 take their iPad, laptop and charger home each night. Work for children in Pre-K to Year 4 will be available by accessing Seesaw or Canvas via the online platform. This can be accessed on any device.

Communication re School Closure

If we need to close the School, families would be informed in the following ways:
• An email sent to each parent’s email address
• An SMS using the mobile numbers registered on the School’s database
• A push notification via the Barker app
• Updates posted on this dedicated web page 

We encourage you to ensure that your contact details are up to date. If you need to update any of your details please do this via the Barker Skoolbag app.

Collecting your child in the event of a school closure

In the event of a closure, the School would follow the directive of NSW Health to isolate any students or staff who may have been directly exposed to a case of the COVID-19 virus. All Co-curricular activities and after school activities would be cancelled in this event.

Secondary Students

Should Barker be required to close, students in Years 7 – 12 will be sent home via their normal transport arrangements, unless indicated otherwise. You will receive a separate EdSmart form to provide permission. For students who travel to and from school via the private Barker buses, these will be available for students to travel home on the regular routes. Arrangements are already in place with Forest Coaches should the Barker buses be required outside of the usual travel times.

Secondary School students (Years 7 – 12) who need to be collected from School may be picked up from the Secondary School Kiss n Drop zone, entry from College Crescent.

Junior School Students

• Pre-K to Year 2 will need to be collected from School from the usual Prep School Kiss n Drop zone.
• Students in Years 3 – 6 who would normally travel home on public transport or on a Barker bus, will be able to do this if the Junior School has received written confirmation from you giving that permission. You will receive a separate EdSmart form to provide this permission.
• Years 3 – 6 students will be collected from the Junior School Kiss n Drop zones, access via the Aquatic Centre gates on College Crescent.


Our Boarding families will be contacted directly by the Head of Boarding, outlining specific advice for our boarders.

As a reminder, please do not send your son/daughter to school if they are unwell. Particularly if they display any symptoms of COVID-19, including fever, coughing, sore-throat and shortness of breath, as highlighted by NSW Health - https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/diseases/Pages/coronavirus.aspx
