Alana Akopian

Architecturally Inspired Cocktail Dress

Alana’s dress was inspired by the architecture of the Guggenheim Museum to design this garment, which is a lightweight mini-dress intended for special occasions.

Alana has used taffeta to convey a modern clean design with folded organza to portray the lines in the building. Fabric manipulation, gathering and dyeing have been utilised, as well as voluminous fabric in the organza sleeves to represent the daring architecture of the museum. The colour palette of the design is neutral, off whites, beige and brown, intended to create a cohesive design that reflects the iconic museum. Alana used fabric manipulation techniques to replicate the spiralling ramp and the raw edged concrete, and tea-dyeing on the fabric to reflect its inability to resist age.
