Design & Technology - Multimedia

The study of Design and Technology provides a broad range of opportunities and experiences that build knowledge and understanding to design a preferred future. This seeks to improve Australia’s competitive advantage and promote a better standard of living.

Students studying Design and Technology – Multimedia in Year 9 and/or 10, have the opportunity to produce design solutions using a wide range of computer applications. Projects undertaken require creativity, technical ability and a capacity to manage files and time constraints. Students are taught how to apply a broad range of computer applications which are used to represent, model and generate creative and technical solutions.

Students study technological innovation and the world of design which seeks to improve people’s lives. They become critical observers of the world around them in assessing:

  • How existing designs can be further improved
  • And how new needs and opportunities can be identified and resolved.

Students learn to respond effectively and creatively through the application of a design methodology.

  • The majority of student time is spent making design projects using computer-based applications and external devices such as 3d printing, laser cutting and CNC machining.
  • Theoretical concepts and skill development are learnt through a project-based learning approach.
  • Students document the design processes they apply in a digital design portfolio

Year 9

Year 9 students have the chance to produce design solutions that are engineered for drones and creative solutions that are appropriate for producing a cinematic experience using special effects.

Design solutions are produced using a range of computer applications including: Fusion 360 for modelling, 3d Studio Max for modelling, animation and special effects, and Premier Pro for Video Editing.

Students develop an understanding of the following:

• How to identify problems and opportunities
• Methods used to research and investigate existing solutions and sources of inspiration
• How to analyse data and information
• How to justify and evaluate ideas
• How to experiment and test using simulated environments and 3D printing.

Students develop skills in the following areas:

• Applying a Design Process
• Communicating design ideas and solutions effectively through hand sketching and Computer Aided Design
• File Management and Project Management.
• The use of a wide range of computer-based applications and external devices such as 3d printers and laser cutters to produce models that validate their ideas.
• Effective communication processes for the documentation for the design process.

Students choosing Design and Technology Multimedia have the opportunity to design solutions to genuine real-world problems and opportunities using a range of computer applications and external devices.

Students produce projects using industry standard technology that meet both functional and aesthetic criteria and meet social and environmental requirements. This subject is for those students who want to specialise in learning how to use a wide range of computer applications to produce genuine design solutions. 

Assessment Structure

Task 1 – Animation and Special Effects – 3Ds Max, Video Editing – Premiere Pro.

Task 2 – Drones for Good - CAD Modelling and 3D printing of component parts for drones, analysis of designs using simulated tests and graphic design for promotional purposes.

Task 3 – The Impact of Technology

Year 10

Students develop an understanding of the following:

• Design concepts and processes
• The impact of past, current and emerging technologies
• Practices used by designers and their impact on the world
• How to apply techniques to be creative
• Methods for communicating effectively – graphic and written.
• Methods for file management and project management.

Students develop skills in the following areas:

• Applying a Design Process
• Visual Communication - hand sketching and computer-generated models and graphics.
• Managing resources and producing quality design solutions
• The safe use of hand and machine tools and processes AND/OR computer-based applications and technologies to produce creative, innovative and enterprising designs
• Writing reports

Students studying Design and Technology Multimedia in Year 10, have the opportunity to design creative and innovative solutions to real world needs in graphic design, product design and architecture. They specialise in using a wide range of computer applications to develop genuine design solutions.

These applications include: ArchiCAD, 3d Studio Max, After Effects, InDesign and more. The processes and applications that are used for each project align closely with those used in industry.

It is not a prerequisite to study Design and Technology Multimedia in Year 9, in order to choose it in Year 10.

Year 11

Students apply a design methodology that empowers them to navigate from unacceptable situations to a preferred future. They apply a range of appropriate materials, processes and technologies depending on the needs of the solution. The HSC course requires students to complete a Major Project and Folio which comprises 60% of the external assessment mark.

Students develop an understanding of the following:

• The interrelationship of design, technology society and the environment
• Creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial activity – Excursion to 3M.
• Techniques to be creative
• Methods for communicating effectively – graphic and written.
• Methods for managing and producing quality projects – Excursion to Powerhouse Museum.
• Current and emerging technologies

Students develop skills in the following areas:

• Applying Design Methodology (process)
• Research Techniques
• Visual Communication - hand sketching, computer generated models, graphics and effects.
• Effective file management
• The proficient use of a wide range of software applications including the Adobe suite and Autodesk suite and more to produce innovative and enterprising design solutions.
• Writing and presenting reports

Students choosing Design and Technology Multimedia in Year 11 complete a Preliminary Course which serves as a foundation into the use of a wide range of computer applications that provide ; Computer Aided Design, Animation, Special Effects, Graphic Design and simulation tests.

It is not a pre-requisite to have studied Design and Technology Multimedia in Year 10, in order to choose it in Year 11.
